We believe that God’s design and call for marriage is intended as an exclusive covenant creating a union between one man and one woman that unites them with Christ.
In Scripture we see that God has established His purpose for marriage, it’s parameters and blessings, and He has declared all this as good for our well being.
God declared marriage to be good from the beginning of creation when he united the two distinct halves of humanity, male and female (Gen 1:27, Matthew 19:4-6), into a permanent commitment of being one. It is God’s intention for marriage to exclusively define the confines of our enjoyment of sexual intimacy and it’s fruitfulness (Hebrews 13:4). It is in the boundaries of marriage that these gifts from God will flourish and benefit both individuals and society (1 Corinthians 7:9). Marriage should be honored and strived to be lived as God intended. Despite the benefits of marriage, we do not believe it to be of a higher calling than a life devoted to singleness.
God uses marriage throughout Scripture as a way to illustrate our relationship with Him (Isaiah 54:5, Matthew 22:1-14, Revelation 21:9), directing us to a deeper calling within our own marriage. As part of its purpose, marriage is meant as a visual display of the relationship between Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:21-33). Both the man and the woman are submissive to each other and the responsibilities and roles God calls them to uniquely play to properly demonstrate the significance of the grace and leadership Christ expresses to the Church.
At Kingship Church we celebrate when a marital union that seeks to glorify God is made, and we are committed to nurturing and equipping marriages and their families to strive to live out their purpose in the Kingdom of God.
Biblical Reflection:
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, // Genesis 1:27-28
He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” // Matthew 19:4-6
Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. // Hebrews 13:4
submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. // Ephesians 5:21-33
